Digital PR – ‘Appy Talk

It is rare you come across something or someone that has the ability to make you feel genuinely amazed and excited…

This 12-year-old boy’s confidence, ambition and intellect are really quite impressive, I’m sure you will agree. In this TED talk he brings up a lot of valid points; one being the fact that children aren’t just playing games anymore…they’re making them.

This follows recent headlines that the UK government are considering appointing IT companies – such as Microsoft – to create the IT curriculum. This would mean students learning about software, programming and java.

In my opinion this is a great initiative. The more students that learn about IT earlier on, the more advanced it will become, paving the future for technology.

However, there is one risk involved. Will this initiative turn the likes of programming into general knowledge, as opposed to a revered skill?

I for one think this risk is worth taking. If it encourages children’s passion for technology and like Thomas Suarez, drives them to invent their own, its value for the industry cannot be underestimated.

It is also exciting to think what we as digital PRs can learn from this new knowledge. The fact that children now want to create their own games, suggests that instead of expecting them to be passive to our social media content, we could involve them in the creation of it. The possibilities are endless.

However, I do have a tendency to get over excited about the potential of digital technology and only time can tell how it will really develop.

In the meantime… I think Thomas Suarez is a name to watch!
